The Artist: K.Flay
Do you know K.Flay? I love K.Flay. Born Kristine Meredith Flaherty, K.Flay is a singer, songwriter, and rapper from the Midwest. Her album, Every Where Is Some Where was nominated for two Grammys in 2018, one of which was for best rock song (you might recognize her ass-kicking “Blood in the Cut” from Bojack Horseman or Billions). Her latest, the Inside Voices and Outside Voices EPs, were released in 2021.

It was around Halloween, and she was wearing a full-body ninja turtle suit and swigging Jim Beam directly from the bottle on stage. It was a wild and intimate concert at a small venue in Deep Ellum. I’ve never forgotten it.
One song of hers, in particular, has always interested me because of the poet character that inhabits its narrative refrains.
