Happy Valentine's Day, shrews!
In recent news that makes me want to unite my head with my desk in holy matrimony, the iconic teen romance 10 Things I Hate About You is getting a sequel, or a reboot, or whatever. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: there are no new ideas in Hollywood.
The original was exceptional, and already a reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Why reimagine it again? For the cash, of course. Everything old is old again.
10 Things helped so many of its young actors rise to prominence: the film was Heath Ledger’s breakout role, and it helped cement Julia Stiles as a household name. Larisa Oleynik, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Keegan, and Gabrielle Union also had supporting roles—a hell of a cast.
And best of all, the film is named, of course, after the poem at its center. To celebrate/lament the news of its revival, and to tug at your heartstrings before Valentine’s Day, let’s revisit PopPoetry’s most-read post!
